Online shopping boom
At the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic, online shopping has witnessed a boom over the past year. According to Inmar Intelligence, nearly 78.7% of consumers have resorted to online grocery shopping since the pandemic has started [1].
The report also stated that around 51.4% of consumers purchased their groceries from Amazon in 2020, a whopping 32% growth since 2019 [2].
The arrival of the pandemic in the first quarter of 2020 has accelerated the growth of the e-commerce industry around the world.
Shopify is set to take advantage of this trend by launching an e-commerce application that enables its sellers to add organic and natural groceries to online stores.
More about the app
The newly launched solution is Shopify’s only online grocery-selling application. With this platform, Shopify sellers can seamlessly import goods from leading brands into their stores.
Besides, the application will also open the floodgates to over 20,000 products from GreenDropShip’s inventory which comprises non-edible as well as food and beverage products.
In order to use the application, Shopify merchants will have to set up their account, enroll in Dropship membership, and also install the app.
After downloading the application, users can add products to their stores and also submit orders for sales made to GreenDropShip.
Shopify’s entry into food & beverage
Shopify’s entry into the food & beverage sphere comes at a time when numerous F&B-only marketplaces have gradually diversified into other areas.
Online grocery shopping around the world has taken off in 2020 and attracted investor attention. Investors are capitalizing on the evolving consumer behavior and many predict that online shopping is likely to become the new normal in the years to come.
