Looks like another major outage has hit the powerhouses of the internet. Whatsapp, Facebook, and Instagram are all down at the moment. All three applications are owned by Facebook and run on shared infrastructure.
There was a significant spike in the number of reports on Downdetector around 9 AM Pacific Time. Some of the other applications that fall under the same family of applications such as Facebook Messenger have also stopped working.

Is it Another DNS Outage?
All these applications have stopped working just as Facebook’s Antigone Davis was live on CNBC defending Facebook’s policies. While messages are not going through and the home page is not refreshing on Instagram, Facebook’s website is displaying an error message.
Whatsapp and Instagram are not refreshing new content, including any messages that are being sent or received while the problem continues. Although it is a very rare sight to see Facebook going down, the impact is huge.
Facebook has not been very clear about the root cause of outages in the past. The company does not tend to elaborate on the issue even after it is fixed. For instance, when Facebook suffered its biggest outage in 2019, it said that the issue was caused during one of the company’s routine maintenance operations.
Down Detector is clearly indicating that the problem is widespread across many countries across the world. At the moment, there is no word from Facebook about what the issue is.
