After broadcasting multiple unconventional and unpopular sporting events for nearly two years, Sports Flick is set to announce multiple broadcasting deals this year. The new broadcast deals will help Sports Flick position itself as one of the top players involved in the Australian sports streaming landscape as the platform shifts its focus towards popular sports such as football.
2021 has been a game-changing year for the sports broadcasting industry in Australia. Many streaming platforms are ready to take a leap and challenge the traditional pay and linear TV model. According to research conducted by Grabyo, a cloud video specialist, a higher number of sports fans are watching live events on their connected devices and smartphones than on TV in Australia.
Sports Flick’s Football-centric Strategy
Founded just over two years ago by Dylan Azzopardi, Sports Flick has largely remained under the shadows of established players such as Kayo Sport, Optus Sport, and alike. Sports Flick was primarily focused on broadcasting some of the lesser-known sporting events which include European handball, Ju-Jitsu, Panama baseball, and Serbian Rugby League.
In the last few months, Sports Flick has revamped its content strategy and developed a football-led strategy to attract new customers. The sports broadcasting platform has secured the rights for various football events such as the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Arabian Gulf League, K-League (previously broadcasted by Optus Sports), and Austria’s Tipico Bundesliga.
According to Azzopardi, Founder Sports Flick, although the interest in football has flared up across Australia in recent years, the Australian football market is notably undervalued in comparison to that of other sports.
He said, “A large part of the Sports Flick strategy has been to provide a content platform for sports that feature limited mass-media coverage in Australia and broadcaster support. Australia is a sporting mad nation, and this extends to a variety of sports. Sports Flick has largely sought to cater and provide an avenue for these different sports to have a broadcasting outlet.”
Partnership with Grabyo
In the first half of February this year, Sports Flick announced its partnership with Grabyo. The deal meant that the platform could now produce and customize its international live broadcasts for regional audiences by using a local talent for commentary and presentation. Sports Flick has also picked up the former SWR 999 digital radio commentator and 10Daily journo, Jessica Dunne.
